I’ve long been against the idea of collecting vinyl records. They take up a lot of space, they degrade over time, are fragile, require cleaning, and special equipment to play. I’ve long been a fan of FLACs instead: CD quality in a portable format, copy ‘em around wherever you need ‘em. Does vinyl sound better? I really have no idea, the difference is probably lost on me.
My opinion on vinyl records changed in 2023 when one of my favorite bands from my high school days released a new album after 18 years of silence. So now, I guess I collect records. I find it to be extremely fun and enjoyable (and sadly, very expensive.) I make an effort to not go overboard. I’ve got one shelf for records, that’s it. So each new record has to fight to earn its place. I’ve started logging when I get something new to celebrate the occasion. I wish I’d have done so sooner. I might retroactively add some more interesting things from my collection.
